18 inch diameter Jupiter globe model features images taken by the narrow-angle camera onboard NASA's Cassini spacecraft on Dec. 11 and 12, 2000, as the spacecraft neared Jupiter during its flyby of the giant planet. Planet Jupiter Globe - Featuring Data from the JUNO Mission (2000)

This detailed globe of Jupiter showcases color maps constructed from high-resolution images captured by the narrow-angle camera aboard NASA’s *Cassini* spacecraft during its December 2000 flyby of the gas giant. While *Cassini* was en route to Saturn, it recorded extraordinary views of Jupiter, capturing features as small as 120 kilometers (75 miles) across.

The map imagery was created using 36 images—pairs of frames taken in two wavelengths (750 nm near-infrared and 451 nm blue) every hour over a 9-hour rotation of Jupiter. Although captured in only two colors, the maps were rendered to closely match what the human eye would see.

These maps reveal Jupiter's dynamic atmosphere in striking detail, including:

* Reddish-brown and white bands circling the planet
* The iconic Great Red Spot
* Chaotic multi-lobed regions, white ovals, and countless small vortices
* Wave-like streaks formed by turbulent winds
* Equatorial “hot spots” (bluish-gray areas), such as the region explored by NASA’s *Galileo* probe
* Lightning-bearing thunderstorms, seen as bright spots within the orange band north of the equator
* Hazy polar regions, with limited visibility due to the viewing angle and thicker atmospheric cover

Each pixel on the rectangular projection corresponds to equal increments of planetocentric latitude and longitude, covering the full 360 degrees of the planet’s circumference and 180 degrees of latitude.

The *Cassini-Huygens* mission was a collaborative effort between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Italian Space Agency. Managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the orbiter and its imaging systems were developed and assembled at JPL, with imaging operations based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.
